Alumni Gifts Increase Despite Poor Economy
November 6th, 2009It seems logical for people to donate less when their wallets are tight. Phillip Lyons, a high school economics teacher in Palo Alto, Calif., has been donating $100 to his alma master, UCLA, every year since graduation. However, things became different after the recession hit. “I haven’t given since the [economic] downturn,” Lyons said. “But in all honesty, I think it’s psychological. I still have a job and the same income but I feel less well off so I haven’t given.” Read More

Evaluating How Tenure Is Given
November 5th, 2009Imagine teaching English as an adjunct professor for five years, working towards becoming a tenured professor. When your time comes consideration, you wait anxiously to see if you are finally to be chosen for tenure … and get passed right on by. You may believe it will be just one more year of waiting, but the truth is, this guaranteed job may never come. More Order, Less Law
November 6th, 2009Inmates have a unique perspective on the criminal justice system. Those I know have been in prison for a long time — some have been in since they were sixteen and one I met entered the prison system in 1985 and will not get out until 2030. All have learned to cope with oppressive architecture, consistent isolation and arbitrary rules. Most have also committed heinous crimes and serious prison infractions. Many speak of political and legal power in near-conspiratorial tones, convinced anonymous moneyed interests — “them” — hold onto power regardless of superficial changes in the power structure. Nearly all seem to feel that the system has failed them. Read More

What Goes Bump In The Night
November 6th, 2009Do you believe in ghosts? It doesn’t matter. The best films on the subject will have you incontrovertibly convinced until the theater lights come on. There have been good and bad films claiming to be “horror,” on slashers, poltergeists, cannibals, plagues, zombies, vampires and even vaginal teeth. None quite spook the soul like an old-fashioned ghost yarn. Ghosts are often felt and not seen, the icy spot in the empty room or the creak of tree branches overhead in a dark wood. Ghosts are: the door that shuts on its own, the piano that plays in the dark, the distant train miles from any tracks. I don’t know about you, but I’ll take a hockey-mask wearing killer. Read More
